This small cabinet with the open lattice work on the top section of the doors was used as food storage . If lined with netting, it will keep flies and other insects out. It was used as such, in the Shanghai area around Zhejiang in Southeast China. It is well constructed, with slats that were specially cut so they have a three dimensional quality and their particular form was designed with aerodynamics in mind. The cabinet has clean lines with sides slightly set in from the top and straight legs. There is a middle shelf. Although it is generally used in the kitchen, it could have been a book storage. Southeast China has humidity and books have to be kept in airy spaces to prevent the infestation of bookworms.
The finish on the piece is original. It needs a little TLC, a good waxing will be a good start.
Its small size is good for use in a small niche and it provides ample storage.
