A rare and beautifully proportioned 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain wash basin; also known as a "Mizusashi-Style Basin" dating to the late Edo / early Meiji period (circa 1850–1880).
This sculptural form features five delicately notched pouring spouts along the rim — a practical detail that immediately distinguishes it from purely decorative bowls. Designed for daily ritual use, likely as a hand-washing basin, it embodies the Japanese tradition of elevating even the most utilitarian objects into works of art.
The interior is richly decorated in deep cobalt underglaze with the beloved Sho-Chiku-Bai motif — the “Three Friends of Winter”: pine, bamboo, and plum blossom — symbols of resilience, renewal, and noble character. These motifs are set within finely diapered reserves, demonstrating both technical precision and aesthetic balance.
The exterior is equally considered, wrapped in rhythmic scrolling patterns and anchored by a rare and charming green enamel band — a subtle detail that softens the form and hints at bathing ritual and domestic refinement rather than formal export ware.
At 10 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches high, the basin has presence without heaviness. Its low, wide profile and sculptural rim create a striking silhouette from every angle.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with no significant chips or repairs noted. Age-appropriate kiln marks and glaze variation consistent with 19th-century production.
Equally compelling as a decorative object or as a functional vessel for display, this basin bridges sculpture, ceremony, and daily life with effortless elegance.
