A remarkable and museum-worthy piece of early American history, this framed display presents an original Virginia land grant document hand-signed by James Monroe as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, dating to approximately 1800 portrait.
Original land grant document from the Commonwealth of Virginia, dated November 5, 1801, and signed by then-Governor James Monroe. It grants 80 acres of land in Rockingham County to Robert Dickey. The document describes the parcel's boundaries using historical surveying landmarks like black oak trees and white oak stumps. It features the official Commonwealth seal affixed in the lower left corner.
The document bears Monroe's signature — rendered in the characteristic "Jas Monroe" script — at the lower right, consistent with authenticated examples from his gubernatorial tenure (1799–1802). Monroe would go on to serve as the 5th President of the United States (1817–1825), making his early gubernatorial signatures rarer and highly sought after by collectors of presidential Americana.
Presented in a professional gold-leaf frame with deep burgundy/crimson matting, the display is accompanied by a period steel-engraved portrait of Monroe, creating an elegant and complete presentation piece. Dimensions: 31 x 20.5”
Condition: Good antique; document shows age-appropriate toning and fold creases; signature intact (consistent with its 200+ years of age), portrait in excellent condition.
