Traditional Antique Miniature Austrian Bronze Dachshund Sculpture, In the Manner of Franz Xaver Bergman, circa 1900
A finely cast early 20th century Austrian bronze model of a long-haired Dachshund (Teckel), executed in the manner of Franz Xaver Bergman. This solid cast cabinet bronze captures the breed mid-stride with lifted head and alert expression, demonstrating confident anatomical modelling and expressive character typical of the Austro-German animalier tradition.
Unlike many Vienna bronzes that were cold-painted, this example features a rich, deep brown-black patina, giving it a more sculptural and refined presence. The elongated low-slung body, deep chest, feathered ears and defined ribcage are carefully articulated, conveying movement and vitality despite the compact scale.
Dimensions:
Length: 10.5 cm
Height: 6.3 cm
Width: 3.3 cm
Weight: approximately 400 grams
The substantial weight relative to size confirms solid casting rather than hollow construction. Surface characteristics are consistent with lost-wax casting, with integrated fur modelling and natural surface undulation. The patina shows warm undertones in recesses and gentle age-related highlights to raised areas, supporting early 20th century production.
This piece sits comfortably within the Vienna bronze and Central European decorative arts tradition of circa 1900. While unsigned and not bearing the Bergman foundry mark, it reflects the broader stylistic language associated with Bergman workshop animal bronzes.
Provenance:
From the collection of an Derbyshire fine art dealers collection and subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
This antique Dachshund bronze is ideal for collectors of Vienna bronzes, Austrian decorative arts, animalier sculpture, dog memorabilia, or traditional European interior design. Its scale makes it perfect for a desk, bookshelf, vitrine or curated cabinet display.
A characterful and well-executed early 20th century bronze sculpture with strong decorative and collector appeal.
