Satsuma buttons were made over 100 years ago in Satsuma, now Kagoshima prefecture. They are often round in shape and varying in size, featuring vibrant hand painted depictions of nature, mythology, and Japanese figures, accented with gold detailing.

This button is a piece of jewelry-like art that would have been used to dress up a kimono obi. Satsuma buttons are desirable to Western collectors of Japonism. The artists and the firing kilns used in this delicate 19th century technique have long disappeared.
