A stunning French giltwood mirror, dating to the Belle Époque (circa 1890), with asymmetrical motifs associated with the Rococo style that was prevalent at the beginning of the Louis XV period. The 27 ½ x 35 inch glass is surrounded by carvings of curled leaves wrapped around a vine. A small floral margent interrupts the foliage at the top of the frame, beneath a protruding coat of arms. The shield, which is presented on a shaped console flanked by flowers, is emblazoned with fluting beneath a raised canton with a cross fleury. An open crown, known as a coronet (this indicates a title of nobility), tops the console and has been carved with magnificent depth, extending at an angle from the rest of the frame.
All sides of the frame have significant depth with prominent ridges over a deep undercut. Sections of the frame edges have a lozenge pattern ground dotted with scalloped leaves, roundels, and flowers. The corners of the frame are especially lavish, with layers of flowers and gadroon surrounded by curled leaves. Our giltwood mirror is a statement piece that reflects the opulence associated with 18th-century France. It would make a wonderful addition to any room of the house.

Evidence of old touchups in both gilding and gold leaf, coupled with more recent professional restoration. The glass is not original and exhibits very light loss of silver with slight buildup. Minor losses and age separations reveal traces of red bole, which is a desired trait. Feet have been added, allowing the mirror to stand, but there is also an eyelet on the back for hanging. less
