Originally designed for use by the hearth, the tall back and high side wings support the head while trapping fireplace warmth and shielding against drafts.

Likely constructed of maple and/or pine, this example features a solid plank seat, turned front posts, simple stretcher base, and a beautifully worn surface with traces of old red finish. The later-applied wings reflect vernacular ingenuity—adapting a standard chair into a functional fireside form. Its tall, sculptural profile shows the influence of traditional lambing chairs.

Rich patina, visible wear, and age-appropriate imperfections speak to its authenticity and long history of use. Structurally sound and full of character.
