Museum-Quality 17th-Century Charles II Dated Yorkshire Wainscot Armchair
An exceptional and rare example of Early English Oak, this Charles II wainscot armchair hails from the Yorkshire/Northern English tradition, circa 1670. The chair features a stately high back with a meticulously relief-carved panel showcasing foliate and thistle motifs. Most significantly, the crest rail is deeply carved with "AD 1670," marking it as a high-status commissioned piece.
The chair's architecture is defined by dramatic, down-swept scrolled arms resting on turned baluster supports, and a rare, original thick one-board oak seat. Every joint is secured with traditional hand-fitted square wooden pegs. With its imposing silhouette and intricate "stick-and-ball" detailing, this chair is a masterclass in 17th-century joinery.
Condition:
Very Good Antique Condition. This chair is a remarkable survivor, maintaining its original structural integrity for over 350 years. The oak displays a rich, dark "honest" patina with expected surface wear consistent with its significant age. The hand-carved details remain crisp. The pegged joints are tight, and the one-board seat is remarkably stable. Any minor historic evidence of woodworm is long-dormant and does not affect the sturdy nature of this collector-grade piece.
A cornerstone piece for any serious collector of early furniture or high-Victorian Americana, this dated armchair offers a rare opportunity to own a tangible, sculptural piece of history.
