Andirons, a.k.a. “firedogs,” are a pair of metal supports used in a fireplace to hold burning logs. (In an era of remote-controlled flames, this explanation may be useful.) The horizontal bar, or "shank," extending out the back elevates the firewood while supporting a decorative vertical post at the front. It’s the posts that keep the burning logs from rolling back into the room.
This especially handsome pair of late-19th or early 20th-century wrought iron andirons do the job with style. Their rustic Arts and Crafts design is characterized by tall, tapering posts with large door knocker-like rings, topped by unique scrolled tops—sculptural in profile. Hand-forged by blacksmiths in heavy wrought iron with a visible hand-wrought texture, these pieces are both functional for managing logs and especially decorative for large, period-style fireplaces—even if you’ve already succumbed to the remote.
