Austrian reform–Werkbund pair of armchairs, design attributed to Oskar Strnad, late 1920s – early 1930s.
Oskar Strnad was one of the key figures of Viennese modernism and housing reform, whose work formed an essential foundation for the humanist functionalism later developed by Josef Frank within the intellectual context of the Österreichischer Werkbund. The armchairs feature a solid oak structure executed in traditional cabinetmaking techniques, combined with original leather strap seating, reflecting the Werkbund ideals of durability, repairability, and functional clarity. The slightly curved plank backrest with cord suspension and central geometric cut-out is characteristic of Strnad’s reform-oriented design language, where structure and visual lightness are closely linked. The gently curved armrests, restrained turned front legs, and lower cross-stretchers demonstrate a balanced synthesis of tradition and modern functional thinking. This model type is supported by auction precedents, including examples attributed to Oskar Strnad sold at Dorotheum, confirming the historical and typological significance of the present pair. A rare and authentic example of Austrian Werkbund-associated furniture design. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
