Jackson Pollock ( 1912 - 1956 ) was an American painter and major figure in The Abstract Expressionist Movement. He was well known for his unique style of " Drip Painting ". The groundbreaking images he created, and the materials he worked with were both experimental, innovative and non traditional. During his life, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety, he was a major artist of his generation. He had a volatile personality and struggled for most of his life. His marriage to artist Lee Krasner has an important influence on his career and legacy. The Museum of Modern Art has held four retrospective exhibitions of his artworks. Pollock is considered to be one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century.
Jackson Pollock's classic poured paintings, made from 1947 to 1950, include several works in enamel on gesso-covered paper, of which " Number 14 : Gray " is a particularly striking example. Pollock dripped the black enamel paint onto the surface while the gesso was still wet so that the paint bled into the chalky white ground, creating a silver-gray halo around the lines and pools of black. His pouring method was a breakthrough in his quest to avoid illusionist space of traditional painting, and create a total visual effect. " Number 14 " epitomizes Pollock's new working method ; the paint literally merges with the ground where enamel and gesso meet. In this period, Pollock strove to free line from representational image and make it function of pure movement.
