Sure to be a conversation starter in any home or office, these early 20thC product tins are perfect for display in a bookcase or tabletop vignette or to serve a functional purpose in corrailing small items such as paper clips, sticky notes, business cards, or jewelry.
The French example is a shoe polish tin sourced at the Pernes antique market in the Provence region of southern France. The company, founded 1883 in the eastern Jura area bordering Switzerland, begun as a leathersmith shop and then expanded their wares to commercial shoe polish and related items. The design of the tin, with a caricature of a leathersmith, the company's location, and the trademark term, "marque deposee" lead us to believe that this piece is from the late 1880s - 1910s.
The American Chesterfield "flat fifty" hinged tin adorned with the old-English style typography and 3-prong crown appears have been fabricated in the early to mid 1900s. The tin was designed to hold 50 units of their premier blend of Turkish & Virginian cigarettes. A product of the Drummond Tobacco Company of St. Louis, the brand rose to prominence after being sold to the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company located in Durham, NC. A marketing juggernaut, Liggett & Myers pushed the product through celebrity endorsements with sports, film, and popular culture stars of the time such as Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, James Dean, Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, Claudette Colbert, and many others.
