The poles were attached … Read more Wood oyster sticks were used by oyster farmers in the South of France to cultivate oysters. The poles were attached to overhead ropes and hung vertically down into the water. The oyster sticks moved with the tide and in effect eventually become pickled by the sea salt and air, making them very hard wearing and long lasting. Exposure to the elements gives the sticks a rustic weathered patina while the spots where the oysters would attach give the sticks several indentions. Today, this once strictly utilitarian item can be repurposed in many decorative ways! Simply standing them up on iron mounts elevates them as sculptural elements in a modern space, hung on a wall as art, placed in a large pot or urn or used to create lamps and mirrors. This set of four oyster sticks are in original as found condition.
