Stoneware Designs West (SDW), is one of the few original potteries of California's pottery boom that started in the late … Read more Stoneware Designs West (SDW), is one of the few original potteries of California's pottery boom that started in the late 1800's and saw its heyday in the middle 1900s, when there were 800 potteries in operation. It was developed by two artisans that had originally worked for Robert Maxwell, who's esthetic is seen as the beginning of the California Modernism age. SDW creations were very similar in style,and utilized the red/brown clay as their primary medium. Unlike delicate pieces of studio pottery, such as Art Nouveau, SDW's pieces were "thick" and sturdy. The pieces produced were more organic and earthy in nature and glazes were modern in application. SDW pieces were appreciated not only for their creativity, but for their functionality as well. This cookie jar is a prime example of that duality. The form is that of a girl made with reddish brown clay. There is minimal white glaze decoration for buttons and a collar. Her "Mia Farrow" bob hair cut is done with a dark brown glaze. The minimalism of style and glaze are very effective in conveying the idea of simplicity of the piece that speaks volumes. This piece was produced in the mid 1960s. The only markings on the piece is the number 909 stamped on the bottom underside. It is in wonderful vintage condition, no chips or breaks. A classic example of SDW pottery. Piece measures 12.5" tall x 9" at widest x 9" in depth. Piece weighs 5+ pounds. See less
