Beautiful antique prestilka. The prestilka is a vital component of the Bulgarian national dress. While daily aprons were more utilitarian, coin-adorned versions like this were reserved for festivals, weddings, and special celebrations.
Hand-woven from wool, these traditional aprons typically feature vibrant strips of red, black, and green. This specific example is characteristic of the Northern Bulgarian (Severnyashka) style, often originating from regions such as Pleven or Vrakas. Wool is warp-woven in colorful striped patterns. Apron is adorned with authentic coins sewn onto the fabric. Historically, the number and types of coins could signify the wearer’s wealth or status.
Purchased while traveling 1980’s and stored since. Pictures show you each and every male, no hidden damages. There is notable wear, all shown.
