This extraordinary pair of armchairs originates from the Vienna Modernism movement and is attributed to Karl Hoffmann and Felix Augenfeld. The armchairs are documented in several historical contexts and can be clearly attributed to Vienna in the early 1930s in terms of both style and period.
Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of an armchair that is almost identical in form and type in a historical interior photograph from the MAK. The photograph shows the living room of Muriel Gardina and was designed by Karl Hoffmann and Felix Augenfeld in 1927. In addition, comparable armchairs by Otto Prutscher from 1930 are documented, which further underpins the chronological classification and design relevance of this form.
The clear lines, balanced proportions, and confident presence make these armchairs a compelling example of the interplay between architecture, furniture design, and interior design of the time.
They are suitable for both historically based interiors and as an exciting contrast in contemporary spaces.
