The Hmong women began creating these intricate , hand-embroidered textiles in refugee camps in Thailand during the late 1970’s and 1980’s, primarily to sell them for income. These cloths serve as a way to preserve and share Hmong culture, history, myths, and personal experiences, as many lost their homeland and traditional way of life.
The text on this particular cloth tells a personal migration story, detailing the journey of the creator from Luang Prabang, Laos, through Thailand , and their eventual arrival and life in the United States, even mentioning President Jimmy Carter’s role in the refugee program. The text honoring former president Jimmy Carter for opening the resettlement program that allowed Hmong refugees to come to the US.
