This large, elegant wardrobe dates from the late 19th century and follows a historicist design language prevalent in France around 1880–1900. The piece's impact stems from its clearly structured tripartite division, the elaborately crafted inlaid medallions, the serene surface of the elm wood, and the accentuated center section created by the original mirrored wing.
Historical Context: French wardrobes of this period combined functional storage solutions with decorative elements and were central pieces of furniture in the bedrooms and dressing rooms of the upper middle class. Historicist furniture consciously revived earlier styles and combined them with contemporary material processing, veneer techniques, and decorative details such as inlays, mirrors, and metal fittings.
Features – Three-part front with central mirrored door panel – Elegant floral inlaid medallions in the side door panels – The two side doors are fixed. Design: Historicist style with symmetrical construction, calm lines, and flat veneer panels. The design is structured by fine inlay work, a gently curved crowning element, and understated brass applications, without dominating the overall effect.
Function: Formerly: Classic wardrobe with a clothes rail and closed interior. Today: Storage and shelving unit with newly manufactured interior fittings; the central mirrored door is usable, the side doors are fixed. Dimensions: Height 221 cm × Width 154 cm × Depth 48 cm. Material and Condition: Solid elm wood with veneered surfaces, original beveled mirror, brass fittings. Very good, stable condition commensurate with age; professionally inspected and structurally reinforced. The original interior fittings were removed due to severe damage and replaced with newly manufactured wooden floors; the historical substance of the exterior structure was preserved.
