Early 19th Century English Regency Flame Mahogany Linen Press / Clothes Press (c. 1820)
Exceptional antique English Regency linen press dating to approximately 1815–1830, constructed in richly figured flame mahogany veneers with a fitted interior of original sliding linen trays above three graduated drawers.
This is a true two-part clothes press, originally designed for the storage of folded linens, shirts, and household textiles. Unlike many surviving examples that have been converted to wardrobes, this piece retains its original sliding tray interior, a feature that is increasingly difficult to find.
The cabinet is veneered in beautifully bookmatched crotch mahogany with dramatic flame figure across the doors and drawer fronts. The upper section opens to reveal four original sliding trays and storage compartment, while the lower section contains three full-width drawers with hand-cut dovetail construction.
Construction details include:
• Hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery
• Solid wood drawer bottoms
• Original paneled backboards
• Original sliding tray interior
• Separate cornice and base
• Bracket feet
• Working locks with key included
It presents beautifully while retaining the character, wear, and patina expected of a 200-year-old piece.
Please note that the brass ring pulls are later replacements. Evidence of an earlier hardware configuration remains visible on some drawer fronts, a common and accepted alteration found on many period pieces.
Dimensions:
50"w x 24"d x 74"h
Condition:
Very good antique condition. Structurally sound with attractive age-related wear, minor veneer repairs, surface marks, and patina consistent with age and use. Interior trays are intact and operate smoothly.
A substantial and increasingly scarce example of Regency-period cabinetmaking, equally suitable for use as a linen press, clothing storage cabinet, or statement piece in a traditional or modern interior.
