A marvellous, extremely rare and strikingly attractive pair of windsor armchairs in wonderful antique condition. Most likely made in the 1900s and almost certainly sold by high-end retailer liberty of london, this gorgeous pair will add an understatedly-refined aesthetic of bygone quality to any interior.
an excellent example of the changing design styles around the turn of the century, these chairs are a wonderful marriage of the arts & crafts, aesthetic and the art nouveau design movements. The result produces an exceptionally elegant pair of armchairs, in which earlier traditional craftsmanship methods have been enhanced to include beautiful decorative flourishes.
this outstanding pair are made of beech wood, are crafted to create stunning silhouettes and feature extremely rare and fabulous, tall and curved ‘shawl’ backs. The beautiful, wavy back-supports surround sleek spindles and support the lovely notched top crest rails, while the wraparound curved arms envelope the sitter and are supported by beautiful, wavy arm supports.
the attractive and very comfortable circular or ‘penny’ seats have vintage chocolate brown leather upholstery with metal studding, no doubt a later addition replacing embroidered predecessors, which give a smart and distinguished look to this fabulous pair. The seat frames have lovely, rounded front edges and are supported by tapering, rounded legs with notched ankles. The legs are joined by wavy h-stretchers – just one of many decorative and eye-catching flourishes to set this pair apart.
all in all this is an outstanding pair of very rare high-end windsor armchairs, which won’t fail to impress and will add bygone sophistication and superb quality to any setting. We’ve only ever seen one other the same and never a pair, so grab these extremely rare beauties while you can!
condition
these super chairs in very good antique condition. Structurally sound and sturdy, they show only minor marks and blemishes to denote their not-inconsiderable age including a few historic woodworm marks to one arm (for which both chairs have been treated for good measure) and hard-to-notice historical repairs to the upper back supports of the other chair. Overall they’re a stunning and exceedingly charming pair of windsor armchairs in really lovely antique condition and if well looked after they should be just as breathtaking and usable for generations to come – please see the photos.
