The chair comes from a private … Read more A single vintage 1990s Cassina “Zig-Zag” chair in cherry wood, marked underneath and numbered. The chair comes from a private collection and has been very well cared for. It is structurally in perfect condition with no repairs and no wood chips - only a few light scratches and dents consistent with 30 years of careful use. The cherry shows a lovely depth and grain with Cassina’s original natural polish.

The Zig-Zag is a true design icon, sought after by interior designers and De Stijl enthusiasts. It’s also worth noting that the piece should only grow in value over time as it eventually moves toward antique status within the licensed Rietveld × Cassina canon. Cassina obtained the official rights to manufacture the Zig-Zag in 1973.

Designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the early 1930s, the Zig-Zag was radical for its day: a perfectly stable chair that looked daringly fragile - a cantilevered seat with no stretchers. It was an unprecedented feat of engineering. Rietveld affectionately called it “the little zigzag,” sometimes describing it as “a shot into space,” a form whose lightning-bolt profile ends in the backrest’s straight line into the sky.
