Historically dating back to the Middle Ages, this unique style of pendant was used to hold aromatic spices or cotton doused with essential oils and worn to offset the less fragrant smells of the streets. Nobility often had elaborately crafted designs made of precious metals and gems. This pomander is marked "silver" and has two turquoise beads with a hinged mouth. The articulated body of the fish "wiggles" with movement giving it a very whimsical quality when worn on a necklace or pin. The patina of the silver over time has given the filigree a nice golden appearance. See less
