Schwartz's Forge and Metalworks, Inc. was established in 1977 as a sole proprietorship by Joel A. Schwartz. Ironwork, as an architectural medium, must be designed to meet the specific requirements of the client, architect, and interior designer. Extensive training and research in design and metalworking at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, (M.F.A., 1977). along with numerous collaborations with other design professionals, has nurtured an ability to create metalwork which functions within, enhances and compliments its environment. This is accomplished through the sensitive application of traditional blacksmithing and modern metal fabrication techniques. The work shown throughout this site should be viewed not only as finished objects but also as sketches of the unlimited possibilities for gates, railings, grilles, screens, and sculptures. Careful attention has been given to creating these pieces with lyrical qualities and fine detail. Some of the work executed by Schwartz's Forge and Metalworks, Inc. has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York City, and Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. Photographs and reviews have appeared in "The New York Times", "The Christian Science Monitor", "Architectural Record", "Interior Design Magazine", "House Beautiful" and several books.
