It’s why this style, originating in 1747 with King George I endured. On offer is a 19th-century solid mahogany tilt-top table that hits on all cylinders. Originally designed for entertaining at tea, this table’s top features eight evenly spaced circles around a larger center circle. Historically it accommodated porcelain teacups and saucers, with matching cake plates and fine, lace-edge napkins. The silver serving pieces for a proper tea (à la “Bridgerton”) would nest in the larger circle at center. This arrangement ensured that even junior staff members could set up this cornerstone of English civilization properly. And how nice that the top tilts up so it could be tucked away when not needed.
The timeless designs of the mid-Georgian period's Thomas Chippendale are reflected in this piece’s intricate hand carving. Beginning with the scallop-edge top with shell-like relief between the circles, the hugely influential cabinetmaker's markers include the acanthus foliage on the pedestal and even on the knees of the three cabriole legs ending in paw feet.
