Elegant in its simplicity and ingenious in its construction, this English Regency folding table dates to approximately 1825–1845 and is often referred to as a coaching table or sporting table. Designed to fold flat for travel or convenient storage, these portable tables were favored for country pursuits, hunting parties, coaching excursions, and informal dining. Today they are appreciated for their refined Regency styling, practical versatility, and sculptural form.
Crafted of richly figured solid mahogany, the table features a rectangular hinged top supported by a beautifully engineered folding X-frame base with gracefully arched legs joined by turned stretchers. The elegant sweeping curves of the base are characteristic of the Regency period, while the ingenious folding mechanism allows the table to collapse quickly without sacrificing stability when opened. Its generous proportions make it equally suited as a console, serving table, writing table, or accent piece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
This table is in nice antique condition, displaying a warm, well-developed patina acquired over nearly two centuries. It shows expected surface wear, scattered marks, and minor imperfections consistent with age and normal use, all of which contribute to its authentic character. The folding mechanism operates as intended, making this an increasingly uncommon and highly functional example of early 19th-century English furniture.
