Tsuba were also a status symbol, with high-class samurai wearing beautifully mounted swords.

Openwork (Sukashi) design in very finely hand forged iron with gold inlay for decorative elements. Showing the Kobayakawa Clan Kamon symbol. Kobayakawa clan's kamon (family crest) is the Hidari-mitsudomoe or "left-turning threefold tomore". This symbol consists of three comma-shaped, swirling, or magatama-like figures arranged in a circle. It is a traditional Japanese crest that signifies a, often associated with Shintoism and the god of war, Hachiman

The design and craftsmanship suggest it is likely from the Edo period (1600-1868).
