A hand-painted faience platter produced by HB Quimper (Hubaudière-Bousquet) in Brittany, France, circa 1930s. The central decoration depicts a traditional Breton couple in profile, dressed in regional costume, surrounded by a floral border rendered in vibrant polychrome enamels. The platter is further distinguished by its sculpted open handles, a classic feature of decorative Quimper wares.
About HB (Hubaudière-Bousquet) Quimper
Quimper’s faience tradition dates to the late 17th century, when Jean-Baptiste Bousquet, a master potter from Provence, established pottery in the Locmaria quarter. By 1708, his son Pierre had founded the first major faïencerie in the town. Through later family alliances — notably the Hubaudière marriage — the manufactory became known as La Grande Maison HB, the initials honoring Hubaudière and Bousquet, and remained central to Quimper’s ceramic heritage. HB pieces were often hand-painted with motifs inspired by Breton costume, folklore, and rural life, giving the ware a distinctive regional character. Today, ceramics bearing the HB mark are treasured for their craftsmanship, surface energy, and a lineage that bridges early French faïence beginnings with centuries of artistic expression.
