CY Twombly ( 1928 - 2011 ) is an American born Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and photographer. The predominately large scale freely scribbled, calligraphic and graffiti like works shift toward romantic symbolism interpreted visually through shapes, forms, colors, and words. Twombly is said to have influenced younger artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Francesco Clemente, and Julian Schnabel.
