This refined Japanese doll is presented in a glass display case with a black lacquered wooden frame. The case opens from the top and is secured with a cord. The back panel is lined with gold-toned fabric, giving the piece a warm and ceremonial appearance.
The figure is inspired by imperial court imagery, echoing the elegance and symbolism of historical Japanese court figures associated with protection and authority.
Dimensions: height 45 cm, width 33.5 cm, depth 26 cm.
The doll represents an elaborately dressed female figure made in the tradition of Hina-ningyō. She wears multiple layers of silk-like textiles in green, pink, purple, and orange, finished with finely woven patterns and decorative cords. Her face is softly modelled with a serene expression and long black hair. On her head she wears a silver-toned crown with floral motifs. In her hand she holds a ceremonial helmet (kabuto), featuring curved, crescent-shaped elements and long white horsehair—powerful symbols of protection, strength, and prosperity.
At the front of the display is a wooden name plaque with an inscription; the red seal indicates the maker.
On the back of the display, a handwritten inscription is present, translating as “for Mr Isogai Eiji,” suggesting a personal commission or gift.
The original packaging label has been preserved and includes the name Hinashi Kōyō, referring to the doll maker or the Kōyō workshop, known for producing traditional Hina dolls.
Traditionally, such dolls are displayed during Hinamatsuri (March 3rd, Girl’s Day) as a symbolic wish for health, protection, and prosperity. Today, this object functions primarily as an exceptional decorative and cultural piece, suitable for placement in a display cabinet, on a console, or as a refined statement in an interior.
Condition is good: the doll, textiles, and display case have been carefully preserved. The glass and lacquer show only light, age-appropriate traces that do not detract from the overall appearance.
