An impressive, rare ceremonial object rooted in Japan’s fire brigade tradition: a matoi (纏), the identification standard historically used as the emblem of a brigade or division.
Dimensions: height 230 cm, diameter approx. 40 cm.
At the top sits a large flower-shaped emblem (sakura), finished with a gold-toned layer that is very likely gilding or gold leaf applied to a base. Beneath the emblem hangs a bundle of leather streamers (baren), partly finished with black painted bands, adding rhythm and movement to the silhouette.
The white-lacquered diamond-shaped plaque bears the bold calligraphy 東部 on three sides: “Tōbu” (eastern division/district). The pole is dark lacquered and ends in a metal base with two “prongs,” giving the piece a strong presence even as a freestanding display object.
Today, this piece works beautifully as a statement object in an interior or gallery setting—against a wall, in a corner, or as a sculptural accent beside a cabinet or display case.
A rare, historically significant piece from Japan’s fire brigade tradition, with an almost museum-like presence in the space.
Condition: attractively aged, honest condition with patina, wear, and craquelure consistent with age and use; the overall piece feels solid and presents well.
