The contemporary art review and journal, Derrière Le Miroir (Behind The Mirror), from French publisher and gallery owner Aimé Maeght of Galerie Maeght, was published from 1946 until 1982. Each issue contained unsigned original lithographs by notable Modernist artists created exclusively for the publication. Galerie Maeght staged a Calder exhibition in 1950 and became the artist's exclusive Parisian dealer for twenty-six years.
Alexander Calder was an American sculptor who used his engineering degree to create kinetic "mobiles," a designation coined by Marcel Duchamp using the French word for motion. Calder also created monumental, free-standing, abstract sculptures which Jean Arp named "stabiles" to differentiate stationary works of art. Calder was prolific, designing sets and costumes in addition to his work as a painter, illustrator, and print maker.
