I love the color of the carved walnut tapestry screen with its elegant Aubusson needlepoint design and velvet on the back side. These were used for a fireplace if they were metal. If they were fabric, they were used to block a draft or the cold.
It is English, and was made in the third quarter of the 19th Century. It is encircled with clavos. trim on the front. The Aubusson needlepoint might lead you to France as the country of origin, but the Aubusson pattern became so popular that the style was widely replicated. The delicate ribbon crest and the simple trestle feet are "all English," according to our appraiser. In the late 1800s, the English were moving toward the Aesthetic movement which was heading toward the craft style,, while the French continued the more ornate design.
Dimensions: 39 high by 22 inches wide. Incredible piece!
