St Paul striking Elymas blind in front of the proconsul Sergius Paulus

This picture represents Saint Paul's first miracle, performed in the presence of the Proconsul Sergius Paulus. Elymas, who was adviser to the Proconsul, and had previously ordered Paul to be whipped for his Christian faith, was struck blind by words spoken to him by Saint Paul. This event led to the Proconsul's conversion to Christianity.

A print after the cartoon executed by Raphael and his workshop for the tapestry of The Conversion of the Proconsul (Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 13, 6-12), one from a set of ten tapestries illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Lettered with titles, production details and dedication to the King.
The tapestry cartoon reproduced in this print is one of the seven that have survived; they are all part of the Royal Collection, and since 1865 are on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The ten original tapestries were woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst and are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.
