Kitagawa Utamaro was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period.His birth year, birthplace, and hometown are unknown. With the assistance of publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo, Utamaro created sensual, realistic portraits of women known as "bijin-ga," and their influence on artists of his time and those of later generations is immeasurable.
