Byōbu screens are exquisitely beautiful emblems … Read more Vintage large 1940’s MCM authentic hand painted water color on 4 framed silk panels. Byōbu screens are exquisitely beautiful emblems of wealth and power dating all the way back to Six Dynasties China (220-589 AD). Motifs changed over time but these intricate pieces were often given as gifts. In the 16th century there was a growth in the application of metal foils, particularly gold. The sticker on this piece dates it to 1945-1949. The scene depicted on this particular piece is a whimsical landscape with a traditional bridge and lily pond at the center, surrounded by butterflies, trees, and a mountainous background. It is signed by the artist in the upper right hand corner. The artwork is set in a heavy solid wooden frame with a creamy beige fabric border that has a repeating bird motif in white. The corners and sides of the wooden frame have lovely hand hammered and carved brass detailing. The back is covered in dark brown canvas fabrication. It can be displayed standing or hung on a wall with it’s universal brackets on the backside! And it's panels fold up nicely for easy storage and moving.
