This piece of textile art is hand painted in ink technique on silk with the reverse side of red woven silk. Makes a wonderful, conversation piece on display. See photo attached.
Japanese "Tales of Genji" silk art fukusa for wall decor. Tales of Genji was written by the noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. Traditionally, in the Edo period textile art was used for shrine wall display or gifts which were wrapped in silk cloths. For the tea ceremony, fukusa were/are used to purify tea utensils. Pictured tea set is NOT included in this sale.
Condition: Excellent antique for its age (1920s-1930s). Some foxing spots which are inherent with silk and long age, but they only make this piece more valuable and authentic. Provenance: Kyoto, Japan.
