Constructed with a wood core and covered in period checkerboard faux Mother of Pearl exterior (Material unknown - It has a firmness to it possibly celluloid, thin tin) The box is reinforced with riveted steel corner guards and latches. The interior is lined in its original decorative Arts & Crafts–era paper with bold florals in plum, rose, and purple tones — a wonderful surprise of color when opened. Interior edge has a remnants of a blue painted edge. I have not found any similar boxes with this gorgeous interior paper. Locking mechanism is stamped as Eagle Lock Co., Terryville, Connecticut hardware.

Some research has called these salesman samples, but these were not made in larger sizes in this design. More likely used to store personal papers, jewelry, or valuables while traveling, this piece has the look of a full steamer trunk in a petite, highly usable size. Perfect on a desk, bookshelf, or entry table for letters, keepsakes, or styling with other antiques.
