moreOriginal 17th century, hand colored copper engraving with later hand coloring of Radix, Fabacea, Lilium, and Poligonatum flowers by Emanuel Sweert. This illustration is plate #7 from Sweert's "Florilegium Amplissimum et Selectissimum", first published in 1612. This is one of four different Sweert botanicals we have available for sale. Due to the popularity of Sweert's collection, 6 editions of the work were made between 1612 and 1647. Double matted and set under glass in a warm gilded frame, it will make a wonderful rare edition to any collection and wall it graces.
Sweert was a Dutch painter and nurseryman noted for his publication in 1612 at Frankfurt-am-Main of Florilegium Amplissimum et Selectissimum. Sweert prepared his Florilegium as a guide of his available stock to show merchants at the Frankfurt Fair of 1612 which included hand colored plates depicting some 560 bulbs and flowers.
