An iconic Gobilin tapestry on a wooden support depicting a famous 18th-century hunting scene. In the foreground, two hunters hold their dogs; in the background, a deer emerges from the lake as a carriage passes; in the background, a rounded castle. The Manufacture des Gobelins, founded by Louis XIV in Paris on the premises of the Gobelins family of dyers, later moved to Bauvais in the 19th century and, after various vicissitudes, reopened in 2007, produced splendid tapestries of antique subjects throughout the 20th century, symbolizing the union of fine craftsmanship and French elegance. The piece offered here was woven on a high-warp Jacquard loom, typically used for large formats.
Made in the first half of the 20th century.
