Substantial in hand and thoughtfully constructed, this piece was clearly made for function first—documents, correspondence, or desk essentials—rather than ornament.

The box features hand-cut finger (box) joints, a detail that reflects early–mid 20th century craftsmanship prior to modern CNC production. The wood shows a warm, aged patina with visible grain and honest wear consistent with decades of use. The interior is left more utilitarian in finish, typical of period desk and document boxes.

Original brass hardware includes a stamped latch and hinges with slotted screws, along with an interior metal lid stay that allows the lid to remain open—an increasingly uncommon feature on later boxes.
