An early Greek Orthodox Bread Seal used to stamp a prosphoron or many prosphora (plural)
The prosphoron is a is a small loaf of leavened bread baked with only 4 ingredients: wheat flour, yeast, salt & water
It is used in Eastern Orthodox and Greek Catholic (Byzantine) Church and it is specifically offered at the Divine Liturgy
While is being prepared, it is stamped with a seal similar to the one we offer, which needs to bear among other symbols the Christogram with the Greek letters IC XC NIKA "Jesus Christ Conquers"
It is all hand made and carved out of one piece of boxwood
Circa mid/late 1800's, Greece. It has changed hands many times during its existence as it was a prized possession in an Orthodox household or church
