Here we have a fantastic sculpture depicting a stylized macaw parrot perched inside an arched frame, both made of copper & brass with the perfect patina. The bird is rendered with remarkable surface detail where the individually scalloped feather plates across the body, a carefully shaped beak, and the detailed wing & tail feathers are a masterclass in handcrafted whimsy. The long, tapering tail feathers extend well below the perch, emphasizing verticality and elegance.
Though the surrounding structure resembles a simplified birdcage or swing, it isn’t meant as confinement but rather it’s a frame that invites your eyes to celebrate form over function and creating a playful tension between containment and freedom.
Why keep a real bird when this one never squawks at dawn, never sheds feathers, it’s well behaved and never needs a cage cleaned? This handcrafted parrot brings all the charm of an exotic companion - minus the guilt. With that subtly expressive head tilt, it’s full of personality and perched in eternal calm...it’s a conversation starter that adds warmth, humor, and artistry to any space.
Sculptures like this are often mis-attributed to Sergio Bustamante, but they are actually inspired by some of the few and rare copper & brass animals he created in the late 70s to early 80s, not the 60’s when Bustamante was actually making paper-mâché sculptures. Sergio Bustamante is a living Mexican artist and sculptor (b.1949) who studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara, then moved to Amsterdam for a few years then upon his homecoming in the mid-1970s he and a group of artist established the “Family Workshop Studio" in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco. He has been there ever since and is mostly known for his bronze sculptures.
