This exceptional early 20th-century secretary chest was crafted by Berkey & Gay Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, one of America’s most respected fine furniture manufacturers. Dating to the late 1920s, the piece reflects Berkey & Gay’s refined interpretation of Italian Rococo Revival design, translated through American craftsmanship and materials.
The chest retains its original hand-painted green finish, which has developed a naturally aged patina over time. Areas of fading and surface wear are present, consistent with age and use, and contribute to the piece’s authentic antique character. The painted decorative elements remain intact and visually expressive, with no evidence of stripping or repainting.
A concealed pull-out writing surface is integrated into the upper drawer section, transforming the piece into a functional secretary desk. All drawers glide smoothly, the desk mechanism operates properly, and the original lock and key are present and functional—a rare and desirable survival detail.
Constructed of solid mahogany and supported by elegant legs and a shaped apron, the chest combines decorative presence with structural integrity. This is a well-preserved, unaltered example of American Rococo Revival furniture, suitable for collectors, designers, or interiors that value originality, history, and craftsmanship.
