Church at St. Legere: Watercolor by Edward H. Barnard
Edward H. Barnard (1855 -1909) is an American Impressionist who traveled in France in the late 19th Century. The Church at St. Legere, with a Romanesque style tower, was an excellent subject for his use of Impressionistic techniques: shimmering light; natural colors; swift, nuanced brushwork and odd angles. The spontaneity of the brush strokes contributes to a sense that the Church is alive. It seems to protect the woman working in the shadow of the tower. The overall image is luminous and has an ephemeral, moment-in-time feel.
Like many other American Impressionists Bernard spent time along the Atlantic Coast in the US.,, living for a time in Massachusetts and often painting in Connecticut. He is known for his landscapes and coastal scenes, some done in Connecticut. He exhibited at numerous locations including Watercolor Clubs. HE was a member of the Boston Watercolor Club as well as several others. It is not surprising that this work was shown at a Water Color Club Exhibition in Greenwich, CT. See image of the faded exhibition label on the back. The paper backing has come unstuck and is somewhat ripped (see image) but the label for the Exhibition is still visible.

We have not opened up the piece to examine it without glass while it has been in our position, c. 14 years. It has been well protected by the glass and shows no loss of paint, tears, color or other imperfections. The double Frame seems to be the original. However, the inner trim of the inside section has lost some decorative elements and the entire frame has been painted over with a more modern type of paint. The paper backing has come unstuck and is somewhat ripped (see image) but the label for the Water Color Club Exhibition is still visible. Dimensions: Framed: : H – 27; W - 22”.
