The art of using bamboo in furniture making originated in China, dating as far back as the early 1600s, and would later heavily influence the English market through methods of trade. During the Victorian era, a resurgence of bamboo was seen throughout prominent estates such as the Brighton Pavilion, creating public demand for these unique handmade pieces. Additionally, the boom of the Industrial Revolution in late 19th century England is considered the most popular era of this style of furniture making, with many pieces still available from the period.

This particular side table was handcrafted in England consisting of a tortoise shell lacquered bamboo frame and two tiered shelves with octagonal top resting on splayed legs. Tops are made from a tightly woven natural rattan material that is also lacquered to ensure longevity of use.
