The art of using bamboo in furniture making originated in China, dating as far back as the early 1600s, and would later heavily influence the English market through methods of trade. During the Victorian era, a resurgence of bamboo was seen throughout prominent estates such as the Brighton Pavilion, creating public demand for these unique handmade pieces. Additionally, the boom of the Industrial Revolution in late 19th century England is considered the most popular era of this style of furniture making, with many pieces still available from the period.

This bookcase was handcrafted in England and consists of a tortoiseshell-lacquered bamboo frame with rattan side panels, top, and three open shelves. The interior of the shelving is lined with a thick, hand “tile”-embossed paper material, with the top and side panels made from a tightly woven natural rattan that is also lacquered to ensure longevity of use. This transitional piece can be used in any living space, with its lightweight structure and timeless design making it a seamless addition to both modern and traditional interiors.
