Pair of Original lithographic engravings documenting the earliest days of New York City's Central Park, dated June 1858 and June 1859. Published in D. T. Valentine's 1859 Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York. Dimensions: 14 x 15" Pair, 14 x 7" individual print
The first view, "View in Central Park (Promenade looking North, June 1858)," depicts the raw, dramatic topography of the nascent park with workers, horse-drawn carts, and construction activity scattered across the rugged terrain. Buildings of the surrounding city are visible on the horizon, emphasizing the ambitious scope of this groundbreaking public works project.
The second view, "View in Central Park, Promenade, June 1859," shows the progression one year later, with the landscape beginning to take shape—young trees planted, pathways emerging, and the careful orchestration of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's visionary design becoming realized.
