Pair of 19th Century Napoleonic-Era Military Watercolors, Continental European Cavalry, Gilt Framed
A finely rendered pair of 19th-century European cavalry studies—elegant horses, richly color uniforms, and unmistakably
Offered here is a matched pair of 19th-century watercolor paintings depicting mounted soldiers in detailed Napoleonic-era military uniforms, presented in classic gilt frames with wide mats.
Each work focuses on a mounted officer accompanied by a standing soldier, emphasizing uniform detail, posture, and horsemanship. The figures are carefully observed, with attention to saddle cloths, plumes, boots, sabers, and firearms—hallmarks of period military illustration and uniform studies.
Uniform & Country Attribution
Based on the cut of the coats, tall shakos, plumed headgear, green and red color palette, and cavalry equipment, these uniforms are consistent with Continental European cavalry of the early 19th century (circa 1800–1815), most likely:
• French or French-influenced Napoleonic cavalry, such as
• Chasseurs à Cheval or
• Light cavalry regiments allied with or modeled after French Imperial forces
During the Napoleonic Wars, many European armies (including Italian, German, and allied states) adopted French-style uniforms, which explains subtle regional variations. For this reason, these are best—and most accurately—described as Napoleonic-era Continental European cavalry studies, rather than attributed to a single regiment.
Both works are signed at lower right, though the signatures are present but illegible, which is not uncommon for period works of this type.
Beautifully decorative, historically evocative, and highly versatile, this pair is ideal for a library, study, office, equestrian interior, or traditional European-inspired home.
European School (19th century), Military Scenes, 1874-76, watercolors, each signed indistinctly and dated lower right, overall (with frame, for each): 10” x 13” x 1”
