The exercise 'in the pilares' (from 'pilares', spanish for 'columns') is a non-violent training method in which the horse is exercised between two columns. This method was invented in the 16th century by antoine de pluvinel, riding instructor to king louis xiii. It serves to refine specific lessons and promotes the horse's gymnastics and suppleness. The horse is tied between the pillars and encouraged to perform various exercises using voice and whip aids. The pillars offer a way of teaching horses lessons where constant contact, undisturbed by the movements of the rider's hand, can be helpful. The exercise is part of the lipizzaner's daily morning training, but is rarely shown in public performances due to the high strain it places on the animals. The rider is dressed in the traditional costume of the spanish riding school, consisting of a black two-pointed hat, brown tailcoat with gold buttons, and white buckskin trousers. It is accompanied by black leather gauntlet boots, matching spurs and white suede gloves.on oval, slightly curved earth base, with the inscriptions 'in the pilares - spanish riding school' on the front and 'hofburg - vienna' on the back. The model was created by prof.
