A rare and sculptural pair of early 20th-century Arts & Crafts brass candlesticks, distinguished by their refined proportions, hand-spun construction, and extraordinary naturally developed verdigris patina.
Each candlestick is formed from solid brass, shaped on a lathe into an elegant trumpet-cup form rising from a subtly waisted stem and terminating in a broad, grounded foot. The silhouettes are architecturally balanced yet softly organic—hallmarks of the Arts & Crafts movement’s devotion to handwork, honest materials, and restrained beauty.
Over more than a century, the brass has developed a luminous surface patina: warm golden undertones bloom through drifting clouds of turquoise and emerald oxidation, especially concentrated around the cups and bases where heat, air, and wax interacted over decades of use. This living surface gives the pair a painterly, almost mineral quality—no two areas are alike, and no modern reproduction can replicate this depth of age and character.
The overall form and finish closely align with metalwork produced by leading Arts & Crafts ateliers such as Heintz Art Metal Shop (Buffalo, NY) and related American and British workshops working between 1900 and 1920, when hand-wrought brass objects with chemical patination were highly prized for their subdued, organic beauty.
When lit, the candlesticks cast a warm glow across their sculpted surfaces, emphasizing the gentle transitions between polished brass and oxidized green, creating an effect that feels both ancient and strikingly modern. They function equally well as functional candleholders or as sculptural objects within a curated interior.
These are not decorative accessories—they are enduring examples of early modern decorative arts, intended to age beautifully and to be appreciated as objects of both craftsmanship and quiet visual power.
